Former Sekhukhune United footballer Shaune Mogaila has pleaded guilty and was convicted of culpable homicide and failing to render assistance in a fatal car accident in 2024.

Mogaila, 31, was on the books of Babina Noko at the time of the accident in October two years ago and later even returned to playing for the club.

He hit another vehicle, which resulted in the sad passing of a nine-year-old girl while her mother and sibling had to be rushed to hospital.

While the PSL player allegedly first fled the scene, Mogaila later turned himself in at the police with initial reports claiming that alcohol and drugs were found in the car of the player.

On Monday, nearly two years after the accident, the National Prosecution Authority of South Africa (NPA) confirmed the player pleaded guilty and will be sentenced in November.

“The NPA has secured a conviction in the case of former professional footballer, Mokete Sean Mogaila, who pleaded guilty to charges of culpable homicide and failure to render assistance,” Magaboke Mohlatlole, NPA Communications Officer stated on Monday.

“The conviction follows a fatal collision in Tembisa on 30 October 2024, when Mogaila’s vehicle veered into oncoming traffic and collided with another vehicle.

“The clash claimed the life of nine-year old Gomolemo Mavimbela and left her mother and 13-year-old brother seriously injured.

“The NPA confirms the conviction as an important step towards securing justice for the victims. Mogaila’s bail has been extended until his next court appearance on 17 November 2026 when he is expected to be sentenced.”
