Bafana Bafana legend Itumeleng Khune has expressed a sense of confidence that South Africa will book their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations berth in Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya.

Dubbed ‘Mzansi’s Number One’ in his playing days, Khune believes that Bafana’s qualifying campaign has been off to a great start and will be capped off with an even impressive collection of all maximum points in the remaining matches.

Pitso Mosimane’s charges beat Guinea 2-1 before trouncing Eritrea 5-0 to sit top of the log standings with six points, three ahead of second-placed Guinea, with four matches to go.

The former Kaizer Chiefs shotstopper has however warned that South Africa should not rest on the laurels though he’s equally confident they can pick up 12 points and seal qualification to next year’s continental showpiece.

“Yes, we’re sitting comfortably at the top, but we don’t have to be comfortable,” he said on Soccerzone.

“There’s still a long way to go. There’s still 12 points to play for and remember that we’re in the race with two countries – Eritrea and Guinea. We don’t count Kenya because they’re the hosts, automatic qualification for them.

“We just need to make sure that we take this game serious [against Kenya] home and away regardless.

“I know we’re going to win and collect all 12 points on offer.”

South Africa lock horns with the Harambee Stars on 11 November at home with the return leg set for 15 November away.
