Kenya national team head coach Benni McCarthy has come out with an honest admission about the Harambee Stars chances of winning the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Harambee Stars have been struggling and have gone three matches without a win. But what triggered backlash from Kenyans was the 1-1 draw with Eritrea in AFCON qualifiers at home.

Kenya’s international break was overshadowed by off-the-field issues disturbing McCarthy’s side, and the coach admitted that those could be having a huge impact on Kenya under performing.

In previous comments, the Bafana Bafana legend mentioned the level of the league, as well as the fact that he and his technical team cannot stay in Kenya because they don’t have papers to stay there as key issues holding the team back.

Speaking with the media after their latest goalless draw in friendly with Rwanda, McCarthy was clear to say that Kenya are far from winning AFCON.

“Even if you were to pay me millions and millions of dollars to win AFCON, I don’t think Kenya has the resources and a strong enough team to compete with Morocco, Egypt, Senegal, Ivory Coast,” McCarthy told the media.

“Those are powerhouses, Guinea can also you know [win it] they have fantastic players. Those are the powerhouses in African football.

“So for us to think that Kenya could win the AFCON, it’s not impossible but it’s highly likely that we will not make it.”
