Mamelodi Sundowns have collected another win in the DStv Premiership after beating Golden Arrows 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon.
Downs entered the game unbeaten and without conceding a single goal in the league this season but also on the back of a trip to Maniema Union in the CAF Champions League.
As a consequence, the coaching duo of Manqoba Mngqithi and Rulani Mokwena had to make a few changes to their starting XI, with Sibusiso Vilakazi getting a rare start.
Downs thought they deserved a penalty in the 15th minute after Sibusiso Vilakazi was brought down inside the box but referee Victor Gomez waved play on.
Minutes later, Arrows had a dangerous shot from outside the box but Siyabonga Dube’s attempt missed the goal at the far post.
The home side had the best chance of the opening 25 minutes when Velemseni Ndwandwe put a header just next to the post.
Arrows continued to look the brighter side but failed to make their chances count, heading into the break with six shots to two.
However, Arrows were not able to keep up the tempo of the first half and Gaston Sirino gave Sundowns the lead in the 59th minute thanks to a well-placed shot from outside the box after being setup by Andile Jali.
The home side had the ball in the back of the net themselves minutes later but it was ruled out because of an offside in the build-up.
Gomez pointed to the penalty spot in the 76th minute when Siyabonga Khumalo was brought down in the box. However, Michael Gumede missed the spot-kick as he placed his shot outside the post.
Nkosinathi Sibisi had a great chance following a counter but couldn’t find a teammate inside the box from a tight angle.
Domingo should’ve made a 2-0 for Downs after being played in by Shalulile but his shot missed the Arrows goal in the 87th minute.
Downs are now 10 successive league games without conceding and moved four points clear of SuperSport United at the top of the log.
