Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis says she wanted more than what her team did during the game against Mozambique.
South Africa handed Mozambique six goals at FNB Stadium on Tuesday in the Women’s AFCON qualifier second leg of their first round, which ended 13-0 on aggregate.
Despite the big win, Ellis says they could have than better than they did against Mozambique, especially in the first half of the second leg.
“Look, I don’t think we did. I think we played much better in Mozambique. Movement of the ball today especially the first half were very static,” Ellis said after the match.
“And in that way, we kept playing the long ball which doesn’t work for us. And we kept saying let’s build up, let’s play, let’s play, and we wanted the two centre-backs to move into those spaces into effect change.
“Because they had sat very deep and that didn’t happen in the goal we scored one from a set piece, but if you look at the other goals we scored, it was while the goals were moved the ball around, when we move the opponent around, and we wanted more of that, but that didn’t happen.
“And then the second half, we actually said to the two centre-backs, you can make us play because there’s so much space in front of them.
“And when they started dribbling through, the opening started happening and once again, you know, we created a lot of opportunities, but we were not clinically in front of goal.”
