Mamelodi Sundowns have finally lifted their first ever MTN8 title and here is which teams have earned the most in prize money from the competition.
Kaizer Chiefs were the first MTN8 champions back in 2008 beating Sundowns on penalties.
However, Masandawana have now finally corrected that oversight and lifted the trophy at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.
Downs earned R8 million for winning the competition this year, while the other seven teams received R800 000.
However, the record champions in the competition are Orlando Pirates who won the trophy three times, in 2010, 2011 and 2020.
Chiefs (2008 & 2014) and SuperSport United (2017 & 2019( have won it twice and the other MTN8 champions are Golden Arrows (2009), Moroka Swallows (2012), Platinum Stars (2013), Ajax Cape Town (2015), Bidvest Wits (2016) and Cape Town City (2018).
Each of them earned R8 million when they lifted the trophy. However, each club also received R800 000 from MTN for just participating in the MTN8 – with SuperSport United being the only team that has taken part in all 13 editions of the tournament since 2008.
As a consequence, Matsatsansa have earned R25.6 million overall – an amount only bettered by triple winners Pirates with R32 million. Chiefs complete the podium of the highest MTN8 earners with R24.8 million.
Sundowns, meanwhile, sit in fourth place, having pocketed R16.8 from their 10 appearances in the competition.
MTN confirmed that the prize money has remained the same for the 2021 edition, with the winners receiving R8 million and all the other participants getting R800 000.
