AmaZulu FC head coach Benni McCarthy has once again insisted that his squad need to be boosted ahead of the CAF Champions League group stages.
Usuthu are in the group stages of top Africa’s competition after having a successful good run in the first rounds of the tournament which saw them knock out five-time champions TP Mazembe.
McCarthy, though, thinks it is not possible for his side to compete in three competitions with only players they have at the moment.
“Unfortunately yes because I don’t think we got what it takes to compete in the CAF Champions League, in the league (domestic) and with the Nedbank starting, just that is above our pay grade,” he told reporters.
“We need additional quality, we need players with mentality that can help push the team now because we are good with decent, so we are good enough to compete in the league but come to Champions League I think we will be running out of gas, we’ll be running out of steam, and it will be a hurdle too much for us.”
Despite, having some individual quality players in his squad, the former Bafana Bafana striker insisted that he still needs more players with quality to face the top teams in the tournament.
“So yeah, I think we need additions, really new additions and not just a freebie here, freebie there, we need quality, not quantity,” he added.
“So that is the only thing that I can say that it will help us to push us even to where we should be when we get the quality that we wanted that we identified and that we need, instead of getting quantity of players to just fill the gaps.
“Because we are going to have a big shortage because we might get Al Ahly, we might get Zamalek, we might get the top teams because the way the group stages are set out there, we bound for a Group of Death by the looks of things.
“And I think with what we have, what we are showing now week in, week out in the PSL we have short-comings, my friend.”
AmaZulu will find out about their CAF Champions League group stage opponents next month.
