The South African national U20 women’s team’s dreams to qualify for the 2022 Costa Rica Women’s U20 World Cup were crushed as they played to a goalless draw against Uganda in Dobsonville today.
Basetsana came into this match trailing 1-0 from the first leg in the third qualifying round away at the beginning of December.
Uganda progressed on a 1-0 on aggregate score and are making their maiden appearance in the fourth qualifying round.
South Africa came into this match with challenges of having to pick an almost new frontline due to most regulars testing positive for Covid-19.
Head coach Jabulile Baloyi had hoped that the new caps would be able to step up and deliver the goods.
“When we started camp it was very challenging, but having had a few sessions with the girls we think we have tried to ensure that we form a team that will compete and turn around the result that we had from Uganda. It has been an issue of Covid mostly and the new players that we have in our starting line-up were about four. So our attacking players are actually new in the sense that they were not part of the team that played the first leg,” Baloyi told iDiski Times.
Baloyi said before the game that it would be devastating to not qualify for the global event again.
