Davids On Why Pirates Can’t Beat Sundowns

Orlando Pirates coach Fadlu Davids says the squad Pitso Mosimane built, added to the financial muscle is part of the reason Mamelodi Sundowns have dominated them in 2021.

Sundowns have now won five straight games over Pirates in the calendar year, a first in their history with 14 goals scored and only two conceded in the process.

Their latest 4-1 win at Loftus Versveld on Friday evening put them 19 points ahead of the Soweto giants after 17 games played and Davids feels they need to look internally to remedy the startling gulf in class.

“I don’t think we have to really look into the amount of points that are ahead. We just have to try to win every game we play and keep progressing the team in terms of our development as a team,” he said after the game.

“You know, it’s a process in terms of since we took over. And yeah, we’ve got to build a team step by step. So not to look too far not to look at the distance. Just looking to the next game and every game was possible we can win. And that’s what we’ll aim for.

“The Sundowns side has been built over over years. And you can see the continuity in terms of coach Pitso’s time. And there’s just continuity in terms of every window being able to strengthen seven, eight, plus players.

“So that’s the continuity that they have. We can’t look too far to the other teams we have to look internally.

“We have look we have to look at ourselves and how we developing as a team and how we progressing and how we putting in not only short term plans but of course long term plans to be able to to to fulfil our potential as a squad.”

Pirates return to DStv Premiership action on Monday when they host Marumo Gallants at Orlando Stadium (15h30).
