Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker has lauded his side’s gritty win over Baroka as they moved back into second place in the DStv Premiership.
Kganyane Letsoenyo’s 80th-minute strike ended their seven-game winless run in the league at the right time with just one more game before the mid-season break.
Barker admits it was a rather fortuitous victory but something his squad deserved after being on the receiving end of similar displays this season.
“Difficult game, credit to Baroka for coming with a good strong mentality, playing to their strength, winning a lot of second balls – they created a lot of width and got a lot of crosses in the box, caused us problems,” he said after the game.
“An opponent you could see that are fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table, so yeah we had to weather the storm, we were a little bit stop-start ourselves.
“There were moments where we did look good when we took care of the ball and rotated and kept it for periods. But as I said sometimes we’ve played well and not got rewards.”
“I think commitment and attitude to just stay in the game and keep plugging away then you have those moments like the goal Letsoenyo, scored – really top class goal.
“We probably needed something special. A great win, we’ll take it, we regroup and look towards one more big effort come next week.”
Stellies travel to the Mbombela Stadium next to face TS Galaxy in their final outing of 2021 on Wednesday.
