Guinea won their opening Group B match, walking away 1-0 winners against Malawi at the CAF Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon on Monday.
The Flames included three South African-based players in their starting line-up, Limbikani Mzava of AmaZulu and the Polokwane City duo of Dennis Chembezi and Khuda Muyaba. Baroka’s Richard Mbule was on the bench but Gabadinho Mhango was ruled out.
Guinea, after hitting the woodwork twice earlier, took the lead in the 36th minute when Issiaga Sylla was on hand to finish from close range after being set up by Martinez Kante. Mzava went close moments later for Malawi from a free kick.
Guinea went close again near the end of the half, but at the break the Flames trailed by only 1-0.
Trying to get back into the game, Malawi’s already depleted squad began to struggle with fatigue, and Mbulu was introduced halfway into the second half.
And while a few chances came to the Flames, Aly Keita, Guinea’s goalkeeper made light work of any effort.
Guinea managed the remainder of the game, and held on for the victory to see them join Senegal on three points. Malawi and Zimbabwe still on zero.
Meanwhile in Group C, a late goal from Soufiane Boufal saw Morocco beat Ghana 1-0 at the same time.
