Komphela Breaks Silence After Downs CAFCL Exit

Mamelodi Sundowns first-team coach Steve Komphela has taken to social media to break his silence after Masandawana’s shock exit from the CAF Champions League.

The reigning DStv Premiership champions lost 3-2 on aggregate to Petro de Luanda after drawing the second leg of their quarter-final 1-1 at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.

The result ended Downs’ chase for their second African crown and came to the shock of many after they went unbeaten through the group stages and had beaten defending champions Al Ahly twice.

Komphela expressed his feelings on social media, admitting the team and coaching staff are very disappointed with the result.

“We shall heed this humane advise and WE ARE ONE. We’re disappointed, heavy hearted and reeling, to the delight of many obviously,” he wrote.

“Even under this huge setback we remain respectful and dignified like we are going to be on Wednesday. The CAFCL starts with winning the League.”

In response to one user, who stated he’s still trusting the technical team around Manqoba Mngqithi and Rulani Mokwena, Komphela expressed his gratitude for the support.

“We serve Masandawana with the greatest humility and no sense of entitlement because football as in life, is extremely unpredictable,” he explained.

“We need good thoughts, good feelings and good behavior even under this deserved provocation. We feel even more sorry for our beloved supporters.”

Downs don’t have much turn-around time between their CAFCL exit and their next game, which will already take place on Wednesday, when they will host Cape Town City and could secure the DStv Premiership title.
