Orlando Pirates have learnt their punishment after being found guilty over the treatment of Tim Sukazi during their DStv Premiership game in December.
The Buccaneers initially pleaded not guilty on the Premier Soccer League charges against them after the fracas that occurred in December between members of Pirates staff and Sukazi in a video that went viral on social media.
After months of back and forth and postponements, PSL prosecutor Zola Majavu had announced last week that Pirates were found guilty for bringing “the league, the game, SAFA, CAF FIFA and the sponsors into disrepute”.
On Tuesday, 3 May, both parties were asked to address the Disciplinary Committee about the appropriate sanction.
“Having been found guilty last week, the DC considered both parties submissions with regard to the appropriate sanctions and the DC ruled as follows,” Majavu said.
“1) Orlando Pirates was fined a monetary amount of R100 000, which is amount is wholly suspended for a period of 12 months on condition that during the period of suspension Orlando Pirates is not found guilty of a offence again – in which case the R100 000 would immediately be activated and payable and they could further be sanctioned for that other infringement which they would’ve committed.
“2) They were also ordered to cover the costs of the DC hearing, with approximately four sittings administratively computed by the league and sent to Orlando Pirates for payment.
“3) They were directed to send an apology to the league. In that apology they need to recognise that they had brought the league, the game, SAFA, FIFA and the sponsors in disrepute in the manner in which their officials handled Mr Sukazi.”
“Orlando Pirates have been found to have unreasonably denied Tim Sukazi access to Orlando Stadium. As a result, Orlando Pirates was found to have brought the league, the game, SAFA, CAF, FIFA and the sponsors into disrepute.” – Z. Majavu
