Al Ahly head coach Pitso Mosimane has praised his countryman Victor Gomes ahead of the CAF Champions League final, calling him the best referee on the continent.
Gomes has received much praise from all corners for the way he officiated this year’s Africa Cup of Nations between Senegal and Egypt.
As a consequence, Gomes, along with fellow South African assistant referee Zakhele Siwela and their Lesothan colleague Souru Phatsoane were selected by the Confederation of African Football to take charge of this year’s CAF Champions League final.
The news came just a few days after Gomes and his team were also included in the African contingent for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Ahead of next week’s CAFCL final, Mosimane has now shared his praise for his countrymen.
“How I used to criticise Victor Gomes, at my humble pie long time back and I am his biggest fan and he knows that,” he said on social media.
“I give him the respect that he deserves and he is currently No1 Referee in the Continent.
“Just finished watching the Wydad vs A Petro Luyanda [game]. The manner at which he managed the game, players, and the dugouts. Just like he managed Senegal vs Egypt.
“Can we give him the honour of Ikhamanga? Please include Zakhele Siwela.”
Al Ahly will take on Wydad Athletic Club at the Stade Mohamed V, the Moroccan side’s home ground on Monday, 30 May.
