‘Benni’s Man United Gig Didn’t Surprise Me’

Richards Bay co-coach Vasili Manousakis, who was Benni McCarthy’s assistant for three years, has sent his best wishes after McCarthy’s appointment at Manchester United.

Manousakis was McCarthy’s assistant at both Cape Town City and AmaZulu, and perhaps of anyone, knows best about McCarthy’s capabilities as a coach.
In the latest edition of iDiski Times, Manousakis told Rob Delport how proud he was of McCarthy, and the former Bafana Bafana star will now get to show how good a coach he is on the world stage.
Manousakis joined Richards Bay at the start of the season and although he was originally confirmed as the Technical Advisor to the team, he has been registered by the club as the co-coach alongside Pitso Dladla, who led the team to promotion last season.

“A massive, massive appointment for Benni, super proud of him,” a beaming Manousakis told iDiski Times

“And as I’ve said to you, I think in a previous interview, having worked with him for three-and-a-half years, I know what he’s capable of, I’ve seen him, I’ve seen it all first hand, every single day at training, not just on match days.

“And he really is a young, innovative coach. His training sessions are dynamic. He’s really tactically astute. He doesn’t miss any details.

“And the way he coaches, he wants his teams to play on the front foot, it’s pretty much how he played the game as a player through the teams that he’s played for, especially when I think of Ajax Amsterdam, and Porto, certainly unbelievable football.

“And it’s actually no surprise to me because as he’s always said to us, you’ve got to aim high and his ambition has always been to coach in Europe and not just anywhere in Europe.

“He’s being ambitious and he said to himself, he will coach at one of the top clubs in the world at some time. So it’s not something that’s surprising to me.”

Richards Bay got off to a winning start in the DStv Premiership when they beat Golden Arrows 2-0 on Saturday and will face Marumo Gallants in their second league fixture on Tuesday.

In the latest edition of iDiski Times you can also hear from new Kaizer Chiefs signings Ashley Du Preez, Zitha Kwinika and Dillan Solomons. We also hear from the new bosses from the Soweto giants, with Arthur Zwane outlaying his ambition for Kaizer Chiefs, and Jose Riveiro for Orlando Pirates. There is also reaction from Hildah Magaia, Nombula Kgoale and Nthabiseng Majiya after Banyana’s historic WAFCON triumph, and more reaction to McCarthy’s appointment at Manchester United, plus much more.
