City and AmaZulu Announce Starting XIs

Cape Town City and AmaZulu have confirmed their starting line-ups for today’s MTN8 quarter-final.

It has been a very different start to the season for the two teams who will meet in the first quarter-final. Brandon Truter’s new-look AmaZulu side have started like a house on fire and find themselves at the summit of the DStv Premiership.

On the other hand, Eric Tinkler’s City team started with three losses in a row, and while they stopped that run of defeats, they are now at the other end of the table. The two teams met earlier in the month in the league, with AmaZulu coming away 2-1 victors at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The head-to-head record favours Usuthu, who have won seven of their 16 previous meetings, with City winning just three, while there have been six draws. However, it was City who came out tops in the corresponding fixture last season when they beat AmaZulu 2-1 in Durban in the MTN8 last eight.

City lost in the final of the tournament last campaign, losing in a controversial penalty shootout to Mamelodi Sundowns. They’ll be burning to get another chance to win this trophy, which they won in 2018. Since their inception, City has been involved in the MTN8 every season and have appeared in three of six possible finals. They have lost in the quarter-finals twice, in 2019 to Polokwane City, and in 2020 to Orlando Pirates.

Since the super eight competition was re-branded as the MTN8, AmaZulu have only made three appearances, reaching the semi-finals once, back in 2009, where they lost to eventual winners Golden Arrows.

Cape Town City XI: Keet; Mkhize, Fielies, Fasika, Mashego; Mokeke, Ambina; Goedeman, Gonzales, Mayo, Lekay.
