Chiefs Into MTN8 semis

Kaizer Chiefs booked their MTN8 semi-final spot after beating Stellenbosch 4-3 in a penalty shootout after it ended 1-1 at the Danie Craven Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

It was sold out affair in the Cape Winelands as fans flocked to the venue to see the Amakhosi, who gave a first of the season to goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune.

Junior Mendieta had a half-chance for the home team in the 11th minute, but couldn’t get proper contact and it went off target. The Argentinean had another chance in the 18th minute, turning and shooting, but it went just wide of Khune’s goal.

Oshwin Andries forced a save from Khune in the 26th minute, while two minutes later a header from Sihjle Nduli struck the crossbar.

Ashley Du Preez, back from injury to play against his former team, shot wide as it remained goalless after half an hour, while Keagan Dolly’s effort in the 36th minute was also off target.

At half-time it remained goalless, but the duck was broken three minutes into the second 45, when Sihle Nduli opened the scoring.

But Chiefs were level ten minutes later, when former Stellies player Du Preez levelled matters, pouncing on a defensive mix-up between Lee Langeveldt and Oshwin Andries. The goal celebrations, unfortunately, led to a few celebrating fans invading the pitch, and a delay in the restart.

Both teams threatened and Nduli went close with a header in the 80th minute, the ball narrowly going over Khune’s goal, while Jayden Adams went wide moments later.

Khune saved another Nduli header with five minutes of regulation time remaining, while Du Preez shot over at the end two minutes later.

Rafiq De Goede’s stoppage time header was heading towards goal, but Khune made a good save to keep it level, while Nkosingiphile Ngcobo’s shot a few minutes later was straight at Lee Langeveldt.

There was all sorts of confusion as Stellies were awarded a penalty in stoppage time, only for referee Jelly Chavani to change his mind minutes later and extra time was needed.

Sinethemba Mngomezulu blasted over in the opening minutes of the first half of extra time, while Langeveldt had to make an important save in the 99th minute to deny Cole Alexander.

But despite a few late half chances, no winner could be found in extra time and penalties were needed.
