Downs Into MTN8 Semis

Mamelodi Sundowns booked their MTN8 semi-final spot after beating their Tshwane rivals SuperSport United 2-0 at the Tuks Stadium on Sunday evening.

It was a slow start for the defending champions as they kept the ball most of the time without hurting their opponents, while Matsatsantsa looked solid at the back.

Sundowns had no business being frustrated by SuperSport as they had chances galore in the first half. Peter Shalulile was denied by George Chigova while Khuliso Mudau dragged his shot wide early in the game but the match went goalless into the break.

Early in the second half Bradley Grobler sneaked into the Sundowns defence but a heavy first touch made him lose the opportunity without testing Ronwen Williams. Downs brought Chilean international Marcelo Allende in the 62nd minute and Ethiopian forward Abubeker Nasir 6 minutes later.

It was Allende who broke the SuperSport resilience as he pounced on a lovely cross by Tapelo Morena to make it 1-0 for Sundowns.

Nasir put the nail into the coffin as he scored the second goal for Downs in the 91st minute to send Masandawana through to the semis.

The Tshwane giants joins AmaZulu FC, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs. The draw for semifinals will take place tomorrow at 20h30.
