Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies have all but qualified for the semi-finals of the 2022 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League, as they defeated Egyptian champions Wadi Degla 5-0 in their second group B match in Marrakech on Thursday night.
The defending champions are now top the group with six points in two games.
Coach Jerry Tshabalala made six changes to the side that defeated Bayesla Queens in the opening match. Maitumelo Boseja started ahead of Andile Dlamini in goals, Karabo Makhurubetshi and Zanele Nhlapo moved from the bench, and so did Oreratile Mokwena, Lerato Kgasago, and Andisiwe Mgcoyi.
Sundowns could have scored as early as the second minute when Chuene Morifi crossed to Lelona Daweti but the latter missed an easy header. In the eighth minute Boitumelo Rabalecouldn’t find Daweti on time.
But two minutes later Morififound Daweti didn’t miss as she scored her third goal of the campaign and gave Sundowns the lead. In the 25th minute, Melinda Kgadiete who came on for the injured Mgcoyi doubled the lead.
In the 40th minute, it was the Morifi-Daweti combination again but the goalkeeper did well to deny Daweti her brace.
Sundowns took a 2-0 lead into the break and 15 minutes into the second half, Rabale struck from a free kick to extend Sundowns’ lead to 3-0. The Lesotho international completed her brace five minutes later from a Morifi cross to make it 4-0. Sundowns got a corner in the 76th minute which Bambanani Mbane scored with a lovely header to extend the lead to 5-0.
Mgcoyi was starting her first game at the tournament and couldn’t finish the game as she was stretched off with an injury early in the first half.
