Matthews Discusses Gabuza & Grobler Futures

SuperSport United Chief Executive Officer Stan Matthews has discussed Thamsanqa Gabuza and Bradley Grobler’s future, with both their contracts coming to an end at the conclusion of the season.

The CEO was speaking to iDiski Times writer Robin-Duke Madlala in this week’s edition of iDiski Times newspaper.

Matthews said though he is not going to give players long-term contracts due to age and other factors and it is up to them to keep performing to convince coach Gavin Hunt that they should stay another season.

“You must understand with Bradley and Gabuza they are 36 years old (Gabuza is actually 35 and Grobler is 34). So we need to look and see because I can’t give long-term contracts at their age, no matter what loyalty and what not,” he said.

“Even this year’s contract , in a small way, was more like we will keep on the extra year because they have been good to us.

“Bradley was out for a lot of last season and Gabuza carried us on his own. His work rate is very high, his spirit is very good, his character is amazing , he’s a great character in the dressing room.

“He’s an inspiring and positive figure and I felt that is was important to have him around for the young players.

“We haven’t ruled out anything. If Gavin Hunt wants to keep him (Gabuza) for another year next year, then we will definitely look at that. It is the same with Bradley.

“He has been with us a long time. Yes he’s injury prone but we know when he’s fit what he will give you.”
