‘I Don’t Know What’s Happening With Tau’

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos admits he’s concerned about Percy Tau’s progression since his move to Al Ahly.

Tau started like on house on fire when he joined the Egyptian giants with five goals in his first seven games but his form has dropped since suffering an injury before the FIFA Club World Cup at the end of January.

This website understands that Tau has been carrying another injury amid his below-par displays in the CAF Champions League of late and could even be ruled out of international duty this month pending medical assessment.

Broos admitted when naming his 23-man squad to face France and Guinea in Europe this month that it’s concerning that the nation’s talisman is going through a dip in form.

“Percy has a little problem for the moment, I think it’s not the Percy Tau we are used to seeing, I know him very well from Belgium before Christmas there were a few injuries so he didn’t play for weeks,” he told SABC Sport.

“So I thought [his struggles] was [due to] that because he struggled with the tempo of the games but now I saw him playing on Saturday, it’s not Percy Tau, so I don’t know what’s happening to him. I will talk to him.”

Broos said he will have a private conversation with the player in order to find out what’s happening behind the scenes as he remains imperative for his plans with the national team’s future.

“I have to know because he can help us a lot with his talent but we need the best Percy Tau, but we’ll see.

“That’s the problem, I said many times, this level of competition has to go up and it’s also good for the players who play abroad, the difference is so big for those guys and they need some time to adapt.

“Percy was not playing in England and could understand because that’s not the type of player for England, but now in Egypt, he has to be a standard player in the team but he has problems also.”
