AmaZulu coach Ayanda Dlamini has revealed that he has voted for Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams as the PSL Footballer of the Season.
Dlamini said Williams has won his heart and people should look at the number of clean sheets he has kept for 2022/23 DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns.
The PSL Footballer of the Season is voted by coaches and Williams will hope that it is not only Dlamini, who has voted in his favour but others as well, while Gavin Hunt already confirmed he didn’t fancy the goalkeeper.
Williams, who joined Sundowns at the beginning of the season from SuperSport United, has featured in 37 matches in all competitions this term, keeping 22 clean sheets.
“I voted for him [Williams],” said Dlamini ahead of AmaZulu final home game against Orlando Pirates at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.
“Because he has been brilliant.”
But Hunt, who gave Williams his debut with SuperSport in 2011, argued that the goalkeeper cannot win such an award especially playing for a star studded team like Sundowns.
He said his Footballer of the Season is Teboho Mokoena, who just like Williams, was signed by Sundowns from SuperSport in the January transfer window last year.
“Do you agree with me that Sundowns didn’t do well this season? You agree [that they did well]?
“How many clean sheets does Williams have?”
Williams and Mokoena have both been nominated for the PSL Footballer of the Season award, alongside Pirates winger Monnapule Saleng.
Sundowns won the league with seven games to spare, the earliest this has been done in the PSL era, and they ended the season having conceded 13 goals, surpassing to 14 they conceded in the 2020/21 season.
