Mokwena – I Can’t ‘Smell’ League Trophy Yet

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena says he cannot ‘smell’ winning the DStv Premiership title yet after another three points were collected against AmaZulu on Wednesday.

Lucas Ribeiro Costa tucked home a penalty in the first half after Themba Zwane was arm-wrestled down by Mbongeni Gumede, with the Brazilian netting his seventh league goal and levelling up with Cape Town City’s Khanyisa Mayo.

It was another victory on the board for Sundowns, with this being the 10th in their 10 opening league matches, setting a record for the team that rode its luck a bit against Usuthu, who were denied what looked a legitimate goal in the second half when Hendrick Ekstein strike was chalked off for offside.

“….. No, I can’t smell,” said Mokwena after a long pause, before mimicking the smell, as he was figuratively asked.

“I can’t smell, no. No title can be won in December. Unless I got a problem with sinuses.”

Sundowns have already sewn up one trophy, having lifted the African Football League last month on the back of having lost the MTN8 trophy to Orlando Pirates in Durban also last month.

Sundowns are now five points clear of second-placed Cape Town City, though Eric Tinkler’s side have played three games more.

With this unblemished start that no one has ever seen in the PSL era when a team has been this dominant and other teams are just far from their standards, it will take a miraculous collapse from the South African giants to lose this title which will the seventh on the trot, which is another continuation of an unprecedented story.
