The Premier Soccer League have confirmed that the domestic transfer window will already close on 26 January instead of the traditional 31st.
It could be an interesting final days of transfer activity with the South African transfer window set to shut this Friday already.
While many had assumed the window would be closing on the 31st of the month, the PSL confirmed that it will close five days earlier, which has led to a flurry of activity at clubs across the country.
“The Premier Soccer League’s domestic transfer window will close on Friday, 26 January 2024, at midnight,” the league said via a statement.
While many teams only returned to training over this past week, club’s offices have been active from earlier, especially for those teams looking to make deals.
After the transfer window shuts any player who is contracted to a club will not be able to sign for another team. Only those players who are free agents before the window closes can sign outside of the window.
Over the past few years the buying and selling of players in South Africa, especially in January, has been at an all-time low, and this window may be more about who is released than who is purchased. With DStv Premiership action only resuming mid-February, we could only see some of those signings announced next month.
While there have been whispers, most of the transfer news involving the big three – Sundowns, Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs – have been kept under wraps.
Sundowns have been linked to a few big signings, including Argentinean midfielder Matias Ezquevil as well as former Bafana Bafana striker Lars Veldwijk, who is a free agent.
As reported by iDiski Times, Pirates have concluded a deal for Thabiso Lebitso after he left Chippa United but are yet to announce the signing, while Chiefs have also been silent as a mouse about any new deals.
