Bafana Bafana and the Congo Democratic Republic have announced their starting XIs for tonight’s third-place playoff at Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny.
South Africa surprised many at the tournament but were undone by Nigeria on penalties in the semi-final, while DRC lost to hosts Ivory Coast.
Bafana could collect their fourth AFCON medal after winning the tournament in 1996, finishing runners-up in 1998 and third in 2000.
It’s the first time they are at this stage in 24 years, while DRC have won the bronze medal in 1998 and 2015.
The two-time winners went through the group stages with three draws before eliminating record champions Egypt in the Last 16 and Guinea in the quarter-finals.
Both teams met each other five times in competitive games, with Bafana winning three, drawing one and losing just one – the most recent clash was a 1-0 win for South Africa in a friendly at Orlando Stadium in September.
