Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie says great strides have been made on the call for VAR implementation in South African football after plans were presented during a meeting with the SAFA NEC.
With countries like Egypt, Morocco and Algeria among that have already implemented VAR in their local leagues, with others having followed suit, there has been rallying cries far and wide to have it introduced in South Africa as well.
A week ago, McKenzie held talks with both SAFA and the PSL in speeding up the process of implementing VAR in South African football after a drama-filled Betway Premiership clash between Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns.
Last weekend, in the MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC, match officials again faced scrutiny for making costly mistakes, with McKenzie now taking to social media to confirm that plans have been presented after both SAFA and the PSL provided a presentation as well as finance required.
“We made great strides in making sure VAR becomes a reality in SA football today. I am hugely impressed with attitude of the leadership of SAFA regarding VAR presence in our football. I am happy with plans presented regarding the furthering of our football, great NEC meeting SAFA,” McKenzie said.
It’s still unclear at this stage how long it will take to have VAR finally getting the greenlight to start operating, with the 2024/25 term already underway with three matches having been played.
