Makaab Slams Broos Over Mngqithi Comments

Former Orlando Pirates coach turned football agent Mike Makaab has expressed his dissatisfaction with Hugo Broos’ comments about Manqoba Mngqithi’s handling of Teboho Mokoena.

Mokoena, 27, came up with a Man-of-the-Match performance for Bafana against Congo Brazzaville, scoring twice in the 5-0 win.

However, he has not featured at club level since the beginning of September, with Broos expressing his displeasure about the player’s situation at the Sundowns.

But Makaab, who is Mngqithi’s agent, insisted that the comments of the Bafana coach were out of order.

“What I can tell you about Manqoba and I’ve been with him for 12 years, he’s not a man who holds grudges, he’s not a man who has his favourites,” he said on Extra-Time on Gagasi FM.

“Manqoba realises that he will be judged by one thing and one thing alone – his results. He has to put out the best players that he believes can deliver for him.

“There had to be a reason – and I don’t know the reason – for him sidelining Mokoena and Mudau. We saw Mudau come on and having a fantastic period of the game when he was reintroduced into the Sundowns [vs Chiefs].

“That shows you there is no ill-feeling between the player and the coach.

“This nonsense about, the hype around Mokoena pointing to himself and saying ‘I am the man’, I find absolutely laughable.

“I understand Hugo Broos’ frustration but let’s put it another way – imagine if Jose Riveiro publicly stated that he could not understand why Hugo Broos wasn’t selecting Patrick Maswanganyi on the basis of what he was achieving at club level.

“I understand that Broos needs his best players available but for him to make those utterances, I think is out of order.

“Manqoba will do what [he thinks is best] – and not only Manqoba, he’s not an island, you’ve got Steve Komphela, you’ve got the Sporting Director, you’ve got the chairman of the club. These are the people that sit down and make these decisions.

“I know the mechanics behind the workings of big football teams.”
