Sundowns Break Chiefs Record In Pirates Drubbing

Records continue to tumble at Mamelodi Sundowns after the defending Betway Premiership champions hammered Orlando Pirates 4-1 to steer nine points clear at the summit of the log.

Miguel Cardoso’s charges raced into a 2-0 halftime lead before eventually winning the game 4-1 courtesy of strikes from Grant Kekana, Lucas Ribeiro Costa’s brace and a thunderous strike late on from Teboho Mokoena.

Not only did Masandawana take charge of the title race, but they broke a new PSL record having scored 35 goals in 15 league games this season. This also means it’s a new PSL record for goals at the halfway stage of a 30-game campaign.

According to OptaJabu, the previous record was held by Kaizer Chiefs who scored 31 goals in the 2004/05 campaign on their way to clinching the league title as they pipped Pirates to the crown by just two points.

The Tshwane giants have also conceded the least number of goals (6) and have a goal difference of 29 having lost just a single match in the league the entire campaign which was a 1-0 defeat away to Polokwane City in October 2024.
