Ideal Debut for Carnell and Makhanya

Bradley Carnell began his tenure at Philadelphia Union with a victory against Orlando City in a six-goal thriller, with Olwethu Makhanya also making his debut.

It has been over two months since Carnell was appointed the new head coach of Philadelphia Union, succeeding Jim Curtin.

The South African mentor achieved a flawless start at Union, defeating Orlando City 4-2 away from home for the first time since 2022. Carnell also afforded Makhanya his first start in Major League Soccer following his transfer to Union in July 2023.

City scored the opening goal just inside eight minutes, giving Carnell’s side a challenge to contend with. However, Union promptly equalized as Israelites Tai Baribo leveled the score at 1-1 inside the 23rd minute. Subsequently, Union dominated the game, with Daniel Gazdag and Mikael Uhre scoring the second and third goals, respectively before Baribo completed his brace.

The objective for Union this season is to be competitive after concluding the previous season in 23rd place with 37 points from 34 games, scoring 62 and conceding 55. Their next encounter is against Xhosa Manyana’s FC Cincinnati next Sunday.
