Riveiro’s Personal Little Fixture Wish

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro admits that he personally wishes all teams had played the same amount of fixtures to give a more realistic view of what the table should look like.

Pirates are currently 12 points behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns in the Betway Premiership, a significant lead, but Pirates have three games in hand.

Both Pirates and Sundowns won their league games on Saturday, beating Cape Town City and TS Galaxy respectively.

While Riveiro says those games in hand are not guaranteed points, he feels it would be a truer reflection of the league scenario if they and Sundowns had played the same amount of fixtures.

“We have the three games, but we have to capitalise those games in points,” Riveiro told the media.

“Otherwise it means nothing. This is a personal answer, okay, I know the situation this season, it’s been a little bit unique, the way that we start the season in the league and all the problems that we went through in the beginning.

“So the schedule, I think today is our game, all the competitions, I think it’s our game 33 if I’m not wrong, 32 or 33, and we are finishing February, and is our game 15 in the league in the end of February, which is something that usually is not like that. So I would like to be, all of us, in the same number of games, so we really know where we are.

“Because it’s a dangerous picture to see, for all of us, to see that the top of the table is 9 or 10 or 12 points far from, us when it is not totally real. Still the possibility to get close. We have to work hard to make it possible, but still possible, but it can be something that for the fans, I want to think that not for us, but sometimes when you look at the table – I don’t do it I promise you. I used to have a look at the table in the last four or five games, maybe to see some other but I’m not a person who is permanently doing the maths there, and there’s nothing for me to to gain with that.

“So I wish, but again, it’s just a wish, there’s nothing we can do, the league is and the competitions are the way they are right now, and we just try to do our best thing, whichever game is coming.”
