Orlando Pirates saw their efforts to close the gap on Mamelodi Sundowns suffer a setback after they went down 2-0 to Marumo Gallants in the Betway Premiership at the Free State Stadium on Saturday night.
Besides Pirates’ early dominance, it was the hosts who took the lead through Gabadinho Mhango in the 15th minute with a close-range tap-in.
Pirates came close to an equaliser in the 35th minute but Tshegofatso Mabasa’s header sailed across the face of goal.
The second period was all Pirates aiming at Bahlabane Ba Ntwa with Relebohile Mofokeng coming close to finding the leveller in the 50th minute but Kagiso Mlambo pulled off a great save to deny him.
It should’ve been 2-0 to Gallants in the 54th minute when Daniel Msendami went through on goal but saw his threat thwarted by Sipho Chaine.

Things went from bad to worse for Pirates when Thalente Mbatha deflected the ball into his own net in the 75th minute as the tie ended 2-0 in favour of Gallants who avenged their 8-1 thrashing from the first round.
