Riveiro On Closing Gap To Sundowns

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has insisted his side are just focussing on running their own race and are not looking at the table right now.

The Buccaneers closed their gap on leaders Mamelodi Sundowns from 18 to 16 points, having four games in hand and still facing Masandawana for the reverse fixture later this month.

Riveiro, though, insisted the situation is tough for his side, as games in hand do not equal points and the only thing they can do is focus on the next game.

“It’s still a long way to go,” he said after his side’s 1-0 win at Chippa United.

“It’s difficult to know where you are when you have three, four or five games in hand. You want to be optimistic that you will collect all the points and then the gap is going to be different.

“Because we don’t know, the only thing we can do is to focus on the next one. That’s what we try to do in the best of our capacity to just think that every game is an opportunity to dream, to do something big.

“And that’s the way we are facing the games, we are not – at least personally and I try to explain the same thing to my players – to not look at the table, to not look at the log because the reality is still not there.

“It’s gonna be there soon, hopefully in some weeks. But right now it’s just 16 teams trying to fight for their position in the log, we are trying to find our own and focus on our own race.”

Pirates return to action on Saturday when they will face SuperSport United in the Nedbank Cup quarter-final.
