Sundowns Book Semi-Final Ticket In Tunisia

Mamelodi Sundowns progressed to the semi-finals of the 2024/25 CAF Champions League after a goalless draw with ES Tunis in the second leg of their quarter-final tie at stade Olympique de Tunisia on Tuesday evening.

They go through thanks to their win in Pretoria a week ago over that gives them a 1-0 aggregate score-line and dumping out Tunis who knocked them out of the tournament in the semi-finals last season.

The first half was a fast, intense and physical affair that was dominated by the visitors who were rather wasteful in front of goal especially towards the end of the half.

Lucas Ribeiro who kept the Tunis defense busy was among the guilty of missing targets as was Jayden Adams but the biggest chance three minutes to the break from Marcelo Allende hit the woodwork.

Tunis had their own chances very early in the game with Yocef Belaili a thorn to Sundowns backline. Belaili set-up Mohammed Tougai from a free-kick in the second minute only for the latter to be denied by Ronwen Williams. There was also another chance from a set-piece for the home side with Ogbelu Onuche missing the target with his header.

The start of the second half saw Tunis return with the same intensity getting into Sundowns’ box, however were let down by their final touch and a simply aware Williams and his defense on the night.

Just after the hour mark Ribeiro had an attempt saved but was almost made to rue that as Tunis found an equaliser two minutes later through Achraf Jabri. However that was disallowed by VAR leaving the Betway Premiership defending Champions step close in their quest to get a second star.
