2014 World Cup Winner – My Best SA Memory

Former Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, who recently visited South Africa to promote the UEFA Champions League, says his best memory of Mzansi is the spirit of the people and their passion for sport.

Schweinsteiger was part of Die Mannschaft squad that finished third at Africa’s first World Cup 15 years ago having narrowly lost to Spain in the semis who then went on to win the global showpiece.

The former Bayern Munich and Manchester United man who retired from international football in 2019 spoke to IDiski Times Digital Editor David Kappel, saying he felt the same warmth from 2010 on his return in 2025 even asking about the vuvuzela.

“The positive energy of the people,” Schweinsteiger told iDiski Times.

“I experienced it back then and also now again; everybody is just smiling all the time. Also, the easy mindedness of the people. I always feel like no one gets really upset. When it comes to football, it’s the passion for the sport.

“The enthusiasm is extreme, and we felt it in 2010 massively. And of course, the vuvuzela, are they still existing?
