Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso says he is thankful to have received the Jose Maria Pedroto award from Portugal’s National Association of Football Coaches.
Cardoso was awarded for the work he has done in Africa, having won a league title in Tunisia with Esperance de Tunis in 2023/24 and the Betway Premiership with Mamelodi Sundowns this past season, with a record 65 goals.
He also reached the back-to-back finals of the CAF Champions league with both clubs, and had an impressive group stage stint with Masandwana at the recently concluded FIFA Club World Cup – earning him recognition in his home country.
“It’s true in Portugal I received a letter from the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, Pedro Proenca, highlighting the work that was done recently by me in Africa,” said Cardoso.
“At the same time that includes the period obviously that I was in Sundowns and how I stated the Portuguese coaches also abroad. And I received a recognition and award from the Portuguese Football Coaches Association.
“It’s called Jose Maria Pedroto award, and it’s the name of an ancient, very important coach in Portugal who coached FC Porto. I was given that award also regarding the work we did.
“And this one is directly related with the season at Mamelodi Sundowns with Champions League final achievement, and mostly with the PSL victory.”
Meanwhile back in South Africa Cardoso is one of the three nominees for the 2024/25 Betway Premiership Coach of the Season award.
