Barker Pleased With Phili’s Growth

Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker has been left impressed with young Langelihle Phili’s growth and hopes this will be his breakthrough season.

Phili has been a promising prospect in the colours of Stellies since joining from AmaZulu with the dribbling wizard helping them win the DStv Diski Challenge before he was promoted to the senior team side. The 20-year-old played some minutes last season in the senior side and finished the season with one goal and one assist.

Things seem to have been coming quite alright for Phili as he already scored two goals in two matches this season. He scored the winner against his former side AmaZulu in the MTN8 quarterfinal and scored in the 1-1 draw against Magesi FC.

Phili was most recently part of the SA U20 side that clinched the 2025 AFCON U20 title and Barker hopes this will be Phili’s season to showcase his talent.

“Top goal he’s got that x-factor in him, so yeah, he is coming on nicely. He scored the winning goal against AmaZulu and scored again today so he didn’t play in the last game,” Barker told the media.

“So, two goals in two starts that’s a good return for Langelihle, I’m looking for him to have a breakthrough season, to show South Africa what type of talent he is.”
