Kaizer Chiefs Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr is impressed with how young defender Aden McCarthy has stepped up in the first team.
McCarthy was promoted from Chiefs’ development ranks two seasons ago but only made his debut towards the end of the last campaign with the side’s defenders mostly injured.
The 21-year-old has however enjoyed a good start to the 2025/26 Betway Premiership term where he has been voted Man of the Match in two of Chiefs’ three matches.
In the last game, the 1-0 win over Richards Bay, the player was subbed early with an injury and Motaung says McCarthy is from football royalty and has taken his chances in a competitive group.
“Very proud of Aden,” said Motaung on SuperSport TV.
“Aden to be very fair, you know he’s very important, he keeps his head in the ground and people around him.
“But he comes from a royalty, football bloodline that is top.
“I mean, I was lucky enough to play with his father, but he’s taking his chance, Aden.
“I think right now, chances are very few and far between. There’s a lot of competition within the group, so if you have your chance, you must grab it and you have to leave that jersey in a better place than how you found it.
“He’s taken his chance it’s only three games, I think let’s talk at the end of May.”
