Shalulile Equals Record Of Chiefs Legend In Downs Win

Peter Shalulile equalled the all-time PSL scoring record of Siyabonga Nomvethe as Mamelodi Sundowns registered their second league victory of the season in a 2-0 win over 10-man Magesi FC at Seshego.

They moved to third position on the standings with seven points while Magesi dropped to 13th with two points from three outings.

It was the home side who had better chances at goal in the first half. Delano Abrahams who proved to be a thorn in the Sundowns defence had two chances in the opening 10 minutes and on both occasions Ronwen Williams made saves. Sphelele Mkhulise had a chance also inside the opening 10 but that shot went wide.

Dikwena Tṧa Meetsi had a golden opportunity to score just after 20 minutes through Thabang Sibanyoni, but his shot was cleared and the rebound fell to Kgomotso Mosadi who was denied by the woodwork.

Sundowns responded through a nice play involving Siyabonga Mabena, Mkhulise and Kutlwano Letlhaku but Elvis Chipezeze denied Letlhaku’s final touch.

Magesi could have gotten a goal just before the break after Mcedi Vandala found Lehlogonolo Mokone who header hit the crossbar leaving the game goalless at halftime.

At the start of the second half, the visitors made one change introducing Thapelo Maseko for Gomolemo Kekana. Five minutes into the half Maseko found Bathusi Aubaas but the latter missed the target. Sundowns then won a corner a minute later as Fawaaz Basadien swung the ball to Jayden Adams who also missed the target.

Maseko had a solo run and one-on-one with Chipezeze, but the Magesi skipper won the contest at the hour mark.

Sundowns were finally rewarded in the 73rd minute from a corner taken by Basadien and finished by Adams.

The visitors weren’t done yet as Shalulile netted the winner in the 87th minute, which was his 129th goal in the PSL, making it a historic night for the Namibian striker.

The Brazilians’ next match is the MTN8 semi-final 2nd leg against Orlando Pirates on Saturday.
