Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has given a latest update on Themba Zwane’s injury, revealing whether the player can be fit for AFCON.
The Africa Cup of Nations will take place in Morocco between December and January, with Bafana aiming to surpass the semi-finals finish they achieved in the last edition.
Zwane, the primary number 10 for Hugo Broos’s men, has been struggling with injuries lately. The last time Cardoso gave an update, he stated the 36-year-old would be sidelined for more than a month.
This past weekend, Cardoso was asked again if the Sundowns captain would have fully recovered before AFCON, he admitted, saying Zwane has been improving more quickly than they had anticipated.
However, he stressed that they won’t rush his return but will proceed cautiously to ensure he comes back only when completely ready.
“I think, yes he can [recover fully before AFCON],” Cardoso told the media.
“But let’s have some patience with him, we’re seeing development much more than we expected. So, that was not a big thing, let’s say.
“Even for a boy of his age, he is recovering very well. So, we have beautiful expectations regarding him.
“Of course, we’re going to be cautious, we need to be cautious, not thinking about the national team but thinking about us and about him as well.
“We will do it with precaution in order to not damage him again. We did it also last time, but if we were cautious, now we have to be extra cautious because he deserves and most of all, we need him.”
