Terrence Mashego, the Mamelodi Sundowns defender recently loaned to Durban City, has shared his experience of being coached by Rulani Mokwena.
The left-back joined Masandawana in 2022, a month before Mokwena became the sole head coach. This was after the club dissolved its co-coaching system between the 38-year-old coach and Manqoba Mngqithi.
Mashego explained that his desire to be coached by Mokwena played a significant role in his move to the Brazilians, stating that it was a major draw for him.
He believes what makes Mokwena stands out is the focus on minor details that other people overlook and the extraordinary amount of time he dedicates to the team’s improvement.
“As a coach, he’s very passionate. He’s one coach I knew that he’s very deep when it’s coming to small details, especially those things that we take for granted, he takes them serious,” he told iDiski Times.
“For example, something like a pass, to say we lost the ball there and checking your runs. You’d even watch your 10 games, making corrections.
“There are times where we’d sit for five hours doing the video analysis, he’s very passionate.
“When I went to Sundowns, I knew I wanted to be coached by that guy and when that opportunity came, I said let me join because there was a time he wanted to sign me when he was at Chippa [United]. So, I knew he wanted to work with me.”
Mokwena is now spearheading MC Alger in the Algerian Ligue 1, having parted ways with Wydad Casablanca towards the end of the previous season.
