A stellar weekend for South Africans abroad saw Philadelphia Union’s duo, coach Bradley Carnell and defender Olwethu Makhanya, secure silverware while other SA players delivered strong performances.

It was a first piece of silverware for both of them with Philadelphia Union, winning the 2025 Supporters’ Shield.

Makhanya played full 90 minutes, helping them keep a clean-sheet as they beat New York City 1-0 at home.

Also in the MLS, Bongokuhle Hlongwane featured for 86 minutes for Minnesota United when they secured a 3-0 victory over Sporting Kansas City.

Antonio van Wyk sealed Ried’s 2-0 win against Tirol in the Austrian Bundesliga, scoring a goal after having an earlier strike disallowed by VAR in the first half.  The day was a positive one for South Africans, as his compatriot, Yusuf Maart, also put in a full 90-minute shift with an impressive performance.

In the Moroccan Botola Pro, Thembinkosi Lorch had a direct hand in two goals for Wydad Casablanca, scoring one himself and setting up another, as they defeated COD Meknes 3-1.

Adding to the goals scored by SA stars abroad, Fagrie Lakay struck for Ceramica Cleopatra as they defeated Haras El Hodood 3-0 in a strong showing in the Egyptian Premier League.

In the English Premier League, Lyle Foster was part of the Burnley team that suffered a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, featuring for 69 minutes of the match.

Meanwhile, Luke Le Roux was an unused substitute for Portsmouth in the EFL Championship as his side edged out Middlesbrough with a 1-0 win.

In Vietnam, Percy Tau completed the full 90 minutes as his side Nam Dinh secured a slender 1-0 victory against Eastern AA away from home.

In the Belgian Jupiler Pro League, Shandre Campbell watched from the bench as an unused substitute while his team, Club Brugge, earned a 1-0 win against Royal Union SG.

Siyabonga Ngezana was on the field for the entire 90 minutes in Romania, contributing to FCSB’s 1-0 league triumph over Universitatea Craiova.
