Hunt – There Will Be A Few Surprises In WC Squad

Following a recent Bafana Bafana call-up for a Durban City player, coach Gavin Hunt believes the final squad for the FIFA World Cup next year will feature some unexpected additions.

City currently have one representative, Fezile Gcaba, who was named in Hugo Broos’s preliminary squad for the international friendly against Zambia.

Hunt expressed his delight that Broos continues to give players opportunities based purely on performance, regardless of the size of their clubs.

The Durban City mentor believes the AFCON squad will see minimal changes, but he forecasts that the World Cup team will contain many unexpected selections who are not presently part of the Bafana fold.

“I don’t think the squad is going to change much for the Nations Cup but for the World Cup, you will have a few surprises,” said Hunt.

“There might be injuries, form this and that. The most important thing is for our teams to do well.

“If your team is doing well, you get recognition like Gcaba has gotten into the team, in a [preliminary] squad because the team is doing well.

“So, can we do well? Can we finish well? And there are big games next year, [international] friendlies and things like that. So, guys I don’t know.

“So, there will be opportunities for a lot of players in South Africa to sort of put their hands up. There’s no doubt about that.”
