Makgalwa – What Held Me Back At Sundowns

Sekhukhune United attacking midfielder Keletso Makgalwa has opened up about what hindered his progress at Mamelodi Sundowns.

Makgalwa was speaking to the journalists on Monday when Bafana Bafana assembled ahead of the international friendly match against Zambia.

The 28-year-old earned a national team call-up following a remarkable season with Sekhukhune, where he was nominated for both the Players’ Player of the Season and PSL Footballer of the Season awards.

His consistent performances finally caught the eye of Hugo Broos who called him in his recent 23-man squad, having previously included him in preliminary squads.

The skilful winger came through Sundowns’ academy, getting promotion to the first team during under the guidance of Pitso Mosimane.

The midfielder cited injuries as a key reason for his struggles in gaining regular game time and further establishing a successful career at Sundowns.

“I started very well as a young boy at the Sundowns academy,” said Makgalwa.

“I played at under 20 World Cup and under 23 AFCON that qualified for the Olympics.

“I think it was a great journey but sometimes there’s injuries in football. So, that’s where I struggled with so many injuries when I was at Sundowns.

“That was after winning the treble with coach Pitso before he left. I think everything was going well and there were so many setbacks after that.

“That’s why I then went on loan to seek some game time somewhere. I think I had a great journey to be honest; it’s just the injuries that were holding me back.”
