Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Benedict Vilakazi hailed Lyle Foster’s contribution in Bafana Bafana’s 3-1 win over Zambia in an international friendly on Saturday.
The striker didn’t score nor assist in the game however was involved in two of the three goals at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. According to Tso, Foster’s runs leading to Oswin Appollis’ opener and Mohau Nkota’s second goal were crucial.
The former Buccaneers captain added that the runs the Burnley forward made and his positioning in the box distracted defenders and opened space for his teammates to finish the job and for ‘Tso’ that’s as good as Foster scoring a brace.
“Sometimes a striker is scoring by creating opportunities for his teammates,” said Tso on iDiski TV.
“If you can look at Appollis’ goal, initially the pass can go to Foster. But look at the run by Foster, he took that defender away to create that space for Appollis. Then [Sipho] Mbule saw that space and played that pass. That’s a goal for me from the striker, well done Foster.”
“Again, look at Nkota’s goal and how he made a run again taking those two defenders away. So Nkota had one defender one vs one and already that space was open as he cut in. And for me that’s another goal. It makes a huge difference in the team to make those runs and this is the thing I always say you need to have a striker in the box.
“You staying there means definitely you are going to have two players because they are not going to allow to have one picking you like it’s a one vs one situation. They need one picking you and then they win the sweeper and as you make a run definitely that one needs to cover and that’s what Foster did.
“For me he scored two goals because those two runs were crucial. Another striker wouldn’t have made that run and there’s no creativity.”
