Durban City defender Fezile Gcaba has expressed his delight after being named in Bafana Bafana’s preliminary squad for the upcoming AFCON in Morocco next month.
South Africa will be hoping to build on their impressive third-place finish from the previous edition, with coach Hugo Broos having announced a 55-man provisional squad that will soon be trimmed to 23.
Gcaba, who has been outstanding for Durban City with three goals in nine matches, says being recognised by the national team technical team serves as motivation.
He feels the call-up is a reminder to keep working hard in pursuit of a place in the final tournament squad.
“To be in the Hugo Broos’ Bafana squad really gives hope as a player that there’s still a lot you can do,” said Gcaba.
“And also, it tells you that the coach is looking at you. And also, it encourages one to perform better to earn a place in the final squad because there are a lot of players doing well in the squad.
“But it really motivates me that I’m in the squad especially, getting that recognition despite being in the team that’s new in the top-flight.”
