Hunt On Pirates – ‘I’ll Deny Them, They’ll Deny Us’

Durban City coach Gavin Hunt has issued bold statement ahead of facing Orlando Pirates in the Betway Premiership clash this afternoon.

The Buccaneers head into the clash eager to leapfrog current log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and a draw or victory for Pirates would be enough to send them to the summit of the table.

At the same time, the Citizens are coming off a draw against Richards Bay and will look to stretch their unbeaten league run to three games.

Hunt insists his side won’t simply sit back against a rampant Pirates outfit. Instead, they plan to be proactive, attack, and try to hurt their opponents.

“I think the strength of theirs is when they play around the box. Isn’t? We saw that again on Tuesday [against Chippa United],” said Hunt.

“You can talk about it all day and analyse it and know how they move but when the game is moving, the ball is moving, you need to be switched on and concentrate.

“But you also have to have a threat to go the other way. You don’t have to just sit it out. We have to try and create chances ourselves.

“When we don’t have the ball, we will defend but when we get it, we will create chances like they will get chances like in a football match. I don’t think anything changes there. I will deny them, they will also deny us, it’s pretty basic.”

He noted that Pirates’ biggest strength lies in their bench, explaining that they consistently introduce substitutes who make a significant impact on the match.

“But their strength is on the bench, you look at impact they bring on, that’s important for them,” he added.

“But [to build that], it takes time, it takes transfer windows with players moving in and out. It doesn’t happen overnight.”
