Carnell – My Advice To Mbokazi About MLS

Philadelphia Union coach Bradley Carnell has given advice to Chicago Fire bound Mbekezeli Mbokazi saying the youngster should embrace being uncomfortable in a foreign country.

It was confirmed earlier this week that the defender has joined the MLS side from Orlando Pirates on a four-year contract reportedly worth $3million (R50 million) with an option to renew.

Carnell spoke to iDiski Times senior journalist Matshelane Mamabolo on different topics including his successful season with Union.

He said the 20-year-old won’t struggle to adapt in the US, but the player has to embrace the environment.

“You must embrace being uncomfortable,” Carnell told iDiski Times.

“America is diverse and welcoming, so settling in might not be a big issue, but it starts with you – what do you want? I’ve lived on short contracts since I was 16. Knowing the future isn’t guaranteed pushes you to work harder. Comfort doesn’t help you grow. So, my advice is: stay curious, stay humble, keep working, and accept the challenges that come with stepping out of your comfort zone.”

Carnell, who was named the MLS Coach of the Season, further added that the notion that the MLS is a retirement league is old as many players have enjoyed success in the league and used it as a stepping stone for bigger leagues.

“The idea of MLS being a “retirement league” is out-dated,” added the former Bafana Bafana international.

“Players like Miguel Almirón, Tyler Adams, Alphonso Davies, Christian Pulisic all developed here or came through the system and are thriving in Europe.

“So, if Mbokazi asked me whether to take an offer from Chicago, I would say yes – it’s a strong club with great coaching, big budget, and excellent facilities.”
