Johnson Opens Up On Targeting Bafana No 1 Spot

AmaZulu FC goalkeeper Darren Johnson has revealed that being number one for Bafana Bafana and at his club are his short-term goals.

The 28-year-old has enjoyed a good start to the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season with Usuthu featuring in 11 matches and keeping four clean sheets. He also helped the side to finish the year in fifth spot on the league table with 24 points in 14 outings, four points from the top places outfit.

Johnson told iDiski Times journalist Sinethemba Sithole about his ambitions.

“Short-term goals, I’d like to get into the Bafana squad, and to cement my place as AmaZulu number one, and to get as much as possible,” Johnson told iDiski Times.

“Long- term, I’d possibly like to make a big transfer. I wouldn’t state which team. I’d like to be Bafana number one and in a big team as well.”

Recently the keeper was named in the Bafana Bafana provisional squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. Though he didn’t make the final squad the former Chippa United goalkeeper said he felt honoured saying it was a reflection of the work he’d put in.

“It’s always an honour when I see my name in the squad called up by coach Hugo Broos.” added Johnson.

“I think it’s a reflection of the hard work that I’ve also put in from the start of the season. I think that previously, people have been doubting me and my qualities. I’m thankful to God for the opportunity he’s given me now at AmaZulu to show what I’m capable of.

“And most importantly, if I continue to do well, everything else will fall into place. At the moment, I have to do my best at AmaZulu.”
