Chiefs Coach – Why Mayo Started

Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef has explained why striker Khanyisa Mayo started in the side’s goalless draw with TS Galaxy in the league over the weekend.

Mayo made a return to the team starting ahead of Asanele Velebayi following the former’s recovery from injury. However, the 26-year-old couldn’t help Amakhosi score against the Rockets in Mbombela. The result meant that Chiefs finished 2025 in fourth position on the Betway Premiership log with 24 points in 13 games, four points from Orlando Pirates at the summit.

Youssef said the decision to start the former Cape Town City man was based on what they as coaches see in training which is always to the benefit of the team than the individual.

“I think all the players deserve to play,” said Youssef.

“We have a big squad now. There is a lot of competition between the players. For us as the coaches we are within the training session we see which player is more ready for the game.

“Also, we prepare the plan of the game, when we have to make a substitution in the right moment.

“[Luke] Baartman was in, in the 80th minute. He played very well last 10 minutes he created a lot of opportunities for us. We have to continue to work.

“The most important thing is the team not the player.”
