Former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has questioned the decision of referee Pacifique Ndabihawenimana to not award South Africa penalty.
South Africa thought they had earned a penalty late in the game when the ball struck an Egyptian defender on the arm inside the box.
However, after a lengthy VAR review, and Ndabihawenimana, who had initially called for a free-kick outside the box, being called over to the screen, the referee waived play on.
Khune was left baffled in the SABC studio, calling it a “very disappointing decision”.
“A very disappointing decision that the referee has made,” he said on SABC2.
“We thought we got a clear penalty, we all saw it, it was inside the box. Why he didn’t give it, only he knows.
“very disappointing decision from the ref.”
While Egypt booked their ticket for the knockout stages, Bafana remained in second place with three points after Zimbabwe and Angola drew 1-1 in the other Group B fixture.
Bafana end their group fixtures against the Warriors on 29 December and will need at least a point to book their spot in the knockout stages.
